Jesus Turned Water Into Wine - The First Miracle
There comes a time in our life that we feel we are running on empty, we are almost gone in gasoline, almost flat when we feel our energy has depleted. Pretty soon when we don’t recharge we can not go on any further. The pressure and the stress of life drain us out with daily mundane routine. The transformation of water into wine at the marriage of Cana is the first miracle attributed to Jesus in the gospel of John.
Every miracle in our life has a purpose but it is not a main thing. The sign is not the thing, the sign is the thing that points to the thing (Ern Baxter). John 20:30 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of His disciples which are not written in this book. But these are written that we may believe that Jesus is Christ, the Son of God and that believing we might have life through His name.
The signs are given so that we might see Jesus and His glory. John also talks about revelations of the glory of God. And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory of the only begotten of The Father, full of grace and truth. God is not saying to us we can be alcoholic but we need to have some principles to guide us in whether we should consume alcohol:
· to have a self control,
· we should not be bound to any addictions, and
· our habit should edify other believers,
· we should set a good example as a Christian.
John 2:1-11 Jesus changed water into wine, this is the first sign that Jesus performed at a wedding in Cana, there were no other miracles Jesus attributed before this. This was Jesus’s first miracle, the wine is the symbol of joy from the bride and the groom, it would be embarrassing to run out of wine at a wedding. Every miracle has a sermon attached to it, the LORD intentionally did not give us a sermon like in any other miracles. Jesus was invited to a wedding, Jesus was not only invited but He ended up being the host. Mary had to adjust to her son, not just a son of man but now as the son of God.
What can we learn from this miracle:
1. Our life can run empty without Jesus (John 2:3)
No matter how much fun we have in the world, it will run out. We will end up with empty tanks. The more we want to enjoy the same thing, we have to double the dose because the same dose will give us a lesser return. This is why people get into addictions and bad habits. It is the law of diminishing return, earthly wine will always run out. However, in the KINGDOM of God we experience the Law of increasing return. It is the opposite of the world’s principles and values. No matter what we go through in life, our God saves the best wine for last.
2. God can turn our life around (John 2:7-9)
What is so amazing about turning water into wine? It was not a public miracle, not even the bride and the groom were not aware of what had happened. The LORD is saying to His disciples that He can take our lives and turn things around. It is a sign for us that we don’t have to live life thinking is over. An assurance that our life is not a dead end because our God can turn it around. In a painting by Moritz Reitzsch called “The Game of Life”, the devil seems to winning. However, one day a chess master named, Paul Morphy saw the painting and upon analyzing it further discovered that the young man has one move that can changed the entire course of the game!
Similarly, there is still one more move, God can turn it around with that one move, an amazing display of what God can do.
3. Jesus is a God of wonder. (John 2:10)
Psalms 72:18 Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who alone works wonders. He calls Himself the God of wonders! When we are running on empty, God wants to show us His wonder, we are entering the season of wonders. He will captivate us by doing wonders. Psalms 136:4 To Him who alone does great wonders, for His lovingkindness is everlasting. Dead end it is does not mean hopelessness in Christ. He is a able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine Ephesians 3:20
John D. Rockefeller faced an incurable disease and he came to know the LORD during his sickness. After giving his life to the LORD, John D. Rockefeller made a strategic move to start giving money away he built a foundation for medical research, the move money he gave away, the longer he lived. He became an instrument in the hands of God and he lived up to 98 years old. God can fine tune our life as we surrender to Him.
Expect a wonder, believe for a wonder, and God is about to show us a wonder. Look to God, we will never run out of fulfillment and wine. It is time to hand it over to the LORD JESUS. God is able to restore us, to make us whole as He displays His wonders. Draw our wine from the LORD for our marriage, work, health, whatever issues we are facing. Focus on Jesus, not the miracle.
