Summary of the Sermon by Pastor Djohan Handojo, at Bethany International Service, on Sunday, 9 June 2019.
Experience The Power Of The Holy Spirit
Today, we are celebrating Pentecost Sunday which is celebrated on the 7th Sunday after Easter. Pentecost Sunday commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and believers of Jesus Christ. In Acts 1:8, “But you will power when the Holy Spirit comes on you and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the Earth.”
God’s promise us the HOLY SPIRIT.
Jesus promises the Holy Spirit for us if we love God and keep His commandments (John 14:15). He will give us another advocate to help us and to be with us forever- the Spirit of truth. God is Spirit and we are to worship Him in the Spirit and in truth (John 4:24).
“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” (Ezekiel 36:26)
“I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.” (Ezekiel 36:27)
WHO is the Holy Spirit?
The HOLY SPIRIT is God HIMSELF, God the Spirit dwelling in us.
Hear O Israel; The LORD our God the LORD is one (Deuteronomy 6:4).
Another reference of the trinity of God is explained in Mark 12:29.
“For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,” (1 Timothy 2:5)
“But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.” (Romans 8:9-10)
We are the temple of God and the Spirit of God dwells in us. (1 Corinthians 6:19)
The POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT works in the lives of believers
If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:25).
It is important for us to be led by the Holy Spirit, to walk daily with the Holy Spirit. Many of us run our daily lives by ourselves and do not depend much on the Holy Spirit.
We can overcome sin and temptation with the Holy Spirit and only through obedience to God, we are changed.
The Holy Spirit enables us to walk supernaturally in the power of God like Gideon. Gideon was a military leader, a judge also a prophet whose calling and victory of the Midianites over Israel. As a leader of the Israelites he led a supernatural victory over the Midianites army despite being outnumbered significantly, leading only a troop of 300 valiant men against 135,000 men. When the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, the Midianites army fled. In Judges 6:34, “But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon then he blew the trumpet and the Abiezzrites gathered behind him.” It was the Holy Spirit that made the difference in the outcome of the battle. Had Gideon fought with a large army, he could have boasted about the strength of the army but with only 300 soldiers, it can only be the hands of God that gave them the victory.
There is no area of life in which believers of Christ do not need the assistance of the Holy Spirit. All of us need to lean on the Holy Spirit.
Not by might nor by power but by My Spirit say the LORD of hosts. (Zechariah 4:6)
Reach out, share and witness about Jesus. Lean upon the wisdom and the counsel of the HOLY SPIRIT to win one more person for Jesus.
