Summary of the Sermon by Pastor Riky Irawan, at Bethany International Service, on Sunday, 26 May 2019.
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. (John 14:16-17)
“Today if we could envision and imagine that we are living in Jesus’s time, just before Jesus ascended to heaven the disciples of Christ had wanted Christ to be with them forever. However, Jesus gave His disciples a different explanation that He would give us an advocate to help us an to be with his forever. It is because what Jesus has done for us, Jesus God the Son endured the cross to redeem us from our sins and death therefore, we as believers we live from the victory of Christ. If we truly understand our victory in Christ we would live a powerful victorious life, we are standing on His victory in every area of our life.
There are 3 things we can learn from John 14:16-17
And I will ask the Father (an earnest request from someone with special relationship - Jesus and God the Father)
And He will give you another advocate (another of the same kind)- God the Holy Spirit. No illustration can describe the Trinity of God perfectly. The Trinity of God can be illustrated like water in different forms; it can be in different states at one time; gas, liquid, and solid. However, our God can be at 3 different states at the same time.
Advocate (parakletos; consoler, comforter, helper, Intercessor)
Comforter Holy Spirit carries our burdens for us to rest in the LORD
To help us and be with us forever- the Spirit of Truth, God the Holy Spirit.
When the Advocate comes whom I will send to you from the Father-the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father- HE will testify about Me. (John 15:26)
Holy Spirit is a helper beyond human limitation. Miracles are possible turning impossibilities into possibilities. The Holy Spirit can provide what man cannot do or give.
The Spirit of God intercedes for us in our weakness (see Romans 8:26-27). We do not know what we ought to pray for but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. The Holy Spirit searches our hearts, knows the mind of our spirit and the Holy Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.
You know Him for He lives (Meno: stay waits, endure) with us and will be in us (en: something operates from the inside of us) (John 14:17).
God is not far away in heaven He is inside us and He operates in us. He is at work, invisible but real. God the Holy Spirit is always ever present for us He is by our side and He operates His supernatural works through us, seen in the natural world. The Holy Spirit is not abstract, He works is the lives of believers. Jesus has emphasized the importance of God the Holy Spirit. But we do know Him because He remains with us and he will be in us (see John 14:16-17)
All the challenges we have in our life can be resolved by the presence of the Holy Spirit. There is no area of life in which the children of God can be defeated by the presence of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit has always been active since the beginning of creation. Let us activate the presence of the Holy Spirit in us. It is vital for God’s children to learn to fellowship with Holy Spirit and understand how He manifests Himself. Holy Spirit helps us today to be extraordinary Christians, comforting us, helping us, guiding us, reminding us, teaching us, counseling us, interceding, advocating us and coming along side us.
