Summary of the Sermon by Senior Pastor Djohan Handojo, at Bethany International Service, on Sunday, 23 December 2018.
Fire of His Love
God sent an angel to Mary with the revelation that she would conceive and give birth to a son, Jesus (Luke 1:26-38) “Do not be afraid. You will conceive and give birth to a son; the name is Jesus and He will be called the son of the Most High. His Kingdom will never end.”
Mary asked how she could bear a child when she was not married. God told her that the Holy Spirit would come upon her. Mary confessed her faith and received the seed of Jesus in her womb, and she said: “be unto me according to your Word, as I’m your servant” (Luke 1:38).
What are the characteristics of a child of God? We are not only called the children of God but also to have a servant’s heart to serve Him best and to grow in maturity.
Jesus’s name in Hebrew means the Saviour.
Mary didn’t know about the King, she watched Him as He grew up and having the favour of men and God, no lies and sin were found in Jesus. That is why He is called the Son of the Most High. He never did men’s will, but he was also 100% man. Mary didn’t realize that one day the people of Jerusalem would crown Him the King of Jerusalem (Mathew 2:2).
Jesus is called Christ, which means the Messiah who would help to set the people free from the Roman Empire.
We celebrate Christmas not only because Jesus is Saviour but also because He is the living God and is the Messiah.
The other meaning of Christmas is when God shows the wonderous signs in the sky, when Wise Men from the East came to Jerusalem asking: “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him?” (Matt 2:1-12).
In this Christmas season, do we still have the fire burning when we share the Good News in Jesus name? “Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with ACTIONS and in TRUTH.” (1 John 3:18)
We need to do the rightfully things with the right motives, and in the love of Jesus. We can preach with love and care to people around us, our actions mean more than just words. We are God’s people and the Kingdom of God is strong, firm, and will never end.
Let us take this time to share the Good News of Christmas to the people around us. Let us share the love of God that they may know Jesus as their personal Lord and Saviour.
