Summary of the Sermon by Pastor Chandra Wong, at Bethany International Service, on Sunday, 22 July 2018.
GOD’S VISION FOR OUR FAMILY
The word “vision” means dream, the revelation from God, or visualizing our future by faith according to God’s Word. Proverbs 29:18 “Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction.”
A vision is the state of being able to see the future, it is about where we are going to be; like Abraham who received a vision of the future – to be a father of many nations; Joseph who dreamt to be the leader of a nation among his siblings.
Vision Gives Direction & Guidance
Ps 119:105 “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
A vision must become so clear that it becomes part of our life identity, and it should give us direction and guidance. God changed Abram’s name to Abraham, which means father of many nations. The Book of Revelation talks about many things that will happen in the future. God wants us to be united with Him in our Father’s eternal home.
Vision Helps Us to Prioritize
Our vision will help us remove distractions. The Apostle Paul faced many trials and challenges but he did not give up because he held on to God’s calling. Our church was born as a result of God’s vision carried by our Senior Pastor Niko Njotorahardjo. He envisioned the house of God around the nations and he channeled all his energy and time to establish a church in Singapore.
Philippians 3:13-14 “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Paul pressed on toward God’s calling in his life and eliminated distractions in order to reach his goal.
Vision Gives Us Strength & Patience to Wait on God’s Time
It takes time for a vision to become reality. The word “wait” in the original meaning is binding ourselves and holding on to our hope and never to let go.
Ecclesiastes 3:11 “He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.”
Waiting upon the Lord and trusting Him that His time is perfect takes much effort. Isaiah 40:31
A BLESSED FAMILY
Blessed Wife (fruitful vine)
Psalm 128:3 “Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine by the side of your house.” During Biblical times, grapes were expensive and a must-have for wedding celebrations. It symbolizes joy and happiness in the family, just like when a godly woman is present in the home.
John 15:1-4 – the wives are the fruitful vines however “the branch cannot bear fruit unless it abides in CHRIST.”
Proverbs Chapter 31 is King Lemuel’s mother’s advice to him. Itt tells about an ideal woman as a mother and a wife. Proverbs 31:30 “A woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.” - A conclusion of a wise woman.
Blessed Children (olive groves)
Psalm 128:3 “… your sons shall be like olive plants around your table.” Olive trees are very useful for both commercial and religious purposes. Every part of the olive tree is useful. It takes many years for olive trees to grow – seven years to grow and seven years to mature. The olive tree produces five litres of olive oil in a year. It will produce oil for hundreds of years. Our children should be a blessing in our home and to this world like an olive tree. Olive oil is used to light the lamp in the temple of God, similarly our children should serve God all their life.
Joshua 24:13 – inheritance of the LORD for the Israelites; the vineyards and olive groves. Our home is our promised land a place filled with vineyards and olive plants.
Psalm 128:6 – long healthy life to see our descendants. God wants us to enjoy the fruit of our labour and He wants to bless us with prosperity.
Psalm 128:2 – “you will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours.” The man of the family will have a job to do – to put the food on the table for the family. A job that the man can even enjoy not burdensome.
Blessed Godly Man
Psalm 1:1-3 - We should align our vision with God’s vision. A happy family is what God has envisioned for us. Take God’s vision and make it the vision of our family.
