Summary of the Sermon by Pastor Djohan Handojo, at Bethany International Service, on Sunday, 24 September 2017.
Vision & Prayer
Lately we have been talking much about excellence. We serve an excellent God – He is excellent in His creation, in His plans, in His character, and in His love for us. He is a God of Excellence. The Bible records some extraordinary men of God with excellent Spirit. The excellent Spirit in us is the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God Himself. In Luke 2:52, “And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.” As we grow into spiritual maturity, our wisdom and excellent attitude will also increase.
Joseph was a man of excellence. It came about after many events in the home of Potiphar, his master. Potiphar’s wife looked at Joseph with desire. She tried to seduce him to lie with her but Joseph refused. Joseph understood that adultery is a great evil and is a sin against God. Joseph was extraordinary in his integrity, even though it resulted in his imprisonment. Joseph had a vision from God and he wants to glorify God with it.
Jesus’s prayers for His disciples contained His vision and mission for His followers.
As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 For their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth.20 “I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; 21 that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me 22 The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; 23 I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. (John 17:18-23)
In John 17:18-23, there are five points which shows that Jesus was praying for His disciples to live an excellent life:
1. That they may all be one (one heart-unity).
“Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven. 20 For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.” (Matthew 18:19-20)
2. That they maybe one in Us (intimacy with the Holy Spirit).
Prayer, praise and worship should be our daily lifestyle. Just as Jesus kept a constant prayer with God the father, we should also develop a similar prayer lifestyle.
3. That the world may believe in Jesus.
We are called to be witnesses for Christ. Spread the love of Christ to people around us.
4. Live in God’s glory.
The resurrection power of Christ enables us to live from glory to glory. As we are in Christ, we carry the glory of God.
5. To be God’s beloved.
We are God’s children and let us live our life to please God the Father and glorify His Name.
Our Lord Jesus is excellent in all His ways throughout His life. Jesus laid down His life to fulfil God’s plans of salvation. He carried all of our sorrows and pain. We have eternal life guaranteed by His Holy Spirit. He first loved us with His sacrificial love for us at the Cross. Let us live for Jesus to bring glory to His name. Pursue a servant’s heart like Jesus did. He came to this earth to serve us and show how to lead a godly life that will glorify God.
