Sunday, 23 July 2017, 1.30 PM | Grand Hyatt Hotel, Singapore

Summary of the Sermon by Senior Pastor Djohan Handojo, Bethany International Service, Sunday, 23 July 2017.

Renewing of Your Mind

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:2)

Although we are not perfect, God is renewing us to be more like Christ each day.  We may be struggling in our situation but we know that God is in control.

For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. (Romans 1:21)

We need to give our mind and thoughts to Jesus.  We may face many challenges in all aspects of our lives.  We as believers are challenged by secularism, wrong ideologies, and cultures of the world (rock, pop).  Thirty-five years ago, Pastor Djohan received the anointing from God to write songs despite having no background in music.  He was then called by Senior Pastor Niko Njotoradharjo to join him to start a new church.  From a humble beginning of 400 members in the south of Jakarta, the ministry has grown to more than 1,000 churches around the world today.

What is impossible for man is not impossible with God.  We need to renew our mind with the Word of God.

God created man to have a creative mind.  Ever since the creation, man is creative that they at one point in time, they decided to build the Tower of Babel.

The Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them. (Genesis 11:6)

Our imagination can go very far and if not controlled, it can affect our health.  A member of the congregation from Surabaya once approached Pastor Djohan and informed him that she could sleep well at night.  Despite taking medicine her situation did not change.  Pastor Djohan told her to renew her mind with the Word of God and listen to worship songs and to worship God.  A week later, she informed Pastor Djohan that she is able to sleep well.

That, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth. Therefore, laying aside falsehood, speak truth each one of you with his neighbor, for we are members of one another. Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not give the devil an opportunity. (Ephesians 4:22-27)

Despite Peter denying Jesus, yet Jesus still did not give up on him.  In John chapter 21, after telling the disciples to drop their nets on the right side of the boat, Jesus called Simon (Peter) and asked him if he loved Jesus.  Jesus asked Peter three times and finally when Peter responded the third time, Jesus asked Peter to tend to His sheep.  Sometimes we still live in our old man but God wants us to put away our old self and put on the new man in Christ.

and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him (Colossians 3:10)

When Isaac was brought to mount Moriah, he just followed his father’s instructions.  Jesus demonstrated that He was obedient to God the Father till the end.

A couple was celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary with their family and friends.  The wife was asked how many mistakes her husband had made and she replied that it was like the stars in the sky.  Everyone present was shocked and the event host decided to ask her what good things her husband had done for her.  She replied only one!  She then added, the one good thing he did was like the sun that shone so brightly that the stars in the sky were no longer visible.  Husband and wife ought to love each other and walk in the love of God.  Parents ought to teach their children to walk in the fear of the Lord.

Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. (Colossians 3:18)

Husbands, love your wives and do not be embittered against them. (Colossians 3:19)

Children, be obedient to your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing to the Lord. (Colossians 3:20)

Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things (Philippians 4:8)

Let our mind focus on the things of God.  When we know the Truth, the Truth shall set us free.
